Description

There is a geometry to devotion, and this brooch knows it by heart. The eight-pointed star, ancient across Hindu, Mughal and Islamic ornamental vocabulary alike, here becomes a floral medallion set with all nine stones of the Navaratna tradition: ruby, pearl, coral, hessonite, blue sapphire, cat's eye, yellow sapphire, emerald and diamond-substitute, each occupying its prescribed planetary position. The frame is cast in brass, worked to hold each stone in a collet or bezel setting that keeps the composition crisp against the polished ground. At two and a quarter inches by two and a quarter inches (approximately 5.7 cm by 5.7 cm) and weighing nineteen grams, the piece sits with real authority, neither overshadowed nor overwhelming. The finish carries the warm amber tone characteristic of lacquered brass work that takes its cues from the ceremonial jewellery traditions of Rajasthan and the Deccan. Pin it to the drape of a silk Kanjeevaram at a puja gathering, or anchor it at the centre of a plain dupatta when a kurta ensemble needs one considered point of colour. The Navaratna palette, moving from deep red through green to indigo, bridges every festive textile. Offered in one free size, the brooch functions as both a saree pin and a dupatta ornament. The brass construction resists everyday knocks, and the collet settings protect each stone from accidental dislodging, making this a piece one reaches for again and again.
