Description

There are nine stones, and then there is the intention behind them. The Navaratna is among the oldest protective configurations in Indian jewellery: nine planetary gemstones set in a prescribed order, each governing a celestial body and, by extension, a facet of human fortune. Here, that ancient schema is rendered in sterling silver, the stones arranged within a compact rectangular frame and edged with a border of vivid emeralds that lend the piece its distinctive cool-green perimeter. The silver is worked with quiet precision, the setting structured rather than ornate, relying on symmetry and the chromatic tension between the central Navaratna cluster and its emerald surround to carry the design. At one point two centimetres in height and just under two centimetres in width (1.2 inches by 0.7 inches), the pendant occupies a considered, intimate scale. At ten grams, it rests with presence without weight. This is a pendant for a silk kurta in ivory or deep burgundy, worn close to the throat on a fine silver chain for a festive luncheon. It suits equally a structured linen shirt at a gallery opening, where its geometry reads as considered ornament rather than occasion dressing.
