Description

Nandi, the sacred bull, rendered not in whisper but in full, considered weight. Cast in warm-toned brass and finished to a deep antique lustre, this brooch depicts Nandi Maharaj in robust profile, every curve of the dewlap and the proud set of the horns resolved with the unhurried attention that characterises devotional metalwork from the Deccan and South Indian temple craft traditions. Brass, chosen here for its weight and its honest warmth, allows the form to carry presence without pretension. The piece measures 2.55 inches in height by 2.55 inches in width (approximately 6.5 cm by 6.5 cm), and at 42 grams it sits with satisfying solidity on the hand before being pinned. The reverse carries a secure pin-back closure, flat enough to lie flush against fabric. Worn at the centre of a cream or ivory Kanjeevaram dupatta, it becomes a focal point that needs nothing else. Pin it to the lapel of a deep mustard kurta for a gathering where art and devotion share the same room comfortably. Free-sized and requiring no alteration, the brooch moves between garments with ease. The brass finish does not demand the delicacy of polished gold; wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth and it will hold its character for years, the patina deepening slowly into something richer than newness ever offers.
