Description
There is something quietly geological about mokite, as though the earth itself decided to become an ornament. Each strand holds seven briolette-cut beads, averaging fifteen millimetres across, suspended on a five-inch (approximately twelve-and-a-half centimetre) string and weighing nine grams in the hand. Mokite, also known as mookaite jasper, is an Australian sedimentary stone prized for its warm, layered palette: bands of ochre, burgundy, cream and rose that shift with every turn of the light. The faceted briolette cut, a teardrop form with triangular facets running from the crown to the pointed base, was historically favoured by lapidaries across Jaipur's gem-cutting quarters for the way it draws light into a stone without the intervention of metal. Here, that tradition of careful faceting does exactly what it should: it lets the colour of the stone speak without interruption. The result is a strand that feels both ancient and entirely modern, honest in its simplicity. Wear a single strand knotted close to the throat over a Chanderi kurta in ivory for a morning occasion, or layer two strands over a sleeveless silk blouse for an evening gathering that calls for understated warmth rather than flash. The free-size strand suits most adult necklines and requires no clasp adjustment. At nine grams, it sits lightly through long hours. The natural variation between beads means no two strands are identical, which is precisely the point.
