Description

There are turtles in Indian iconography older than most dynasties, and this pendant remembers all of them. The turtle, Kurma, carries worlds on its back in Sanskrit cosmology, and the karigars who work marcasite into sterling silver have long understood the weight of that symbolism. Here the motif is rendered in 925 sterling silver, its carapace inlaid with faceted marcasite stones set flush into the metal, each one glinting with a cool, pewter-grey lustre characteristic of this iron pyrite mineral. Marcasite setting of this kind asks for patience: every stone is pressed individually into a bezel or grain-set collet, a technique shared across the silver-working traditions of Rajasthan and Bengal, where artisans have long favoured the stone for its quiet, moonlit shimmer against oxidised or polished silver grounds. The finish here reads as a deliberate contrast between the brightwork of the stones and the deeper tonal ground of the shell form itself. At 4.2 cm tall and 2.3 cm wide, weighing 9.35 grams, the piece sits with authority on the collarbone. Pair it with a deep-green silk kurta for a festive evening, or thread it on a fine chain over a cream linen shirt for a considered daytime look that asks no further explanation. The pendant is free-sized by nature and comes with a standard bail to accept most fine or medium chains. Sterling silver of this gauge wears durably, requiring only occasional dry buffing to keep the marcasite at its most luminous.
