Description

She stands at the centre of time, one foot on the chest of Shiva, arms outstretched in the terrible grace of liberation. Rendered in sterling silver, this pendant captures the iconography of Mahakali with the precision that devotional silverwork demands. The goddess rises in full standing posture, her form detailed with the care of a tradition rooted in South Indian temple craft and the repoussé and engraving sensibilities long practised by Bengali and Nagercoil silversmiths. Sterling silver, an alloy of 92.5 per cent pure silver, holds fine surface detail without softening it, allowing the karigars to articulate each attribute of the deity, the crown, the outstretched limbs, the prone figure of Shiva beneath her feet. The finish is a warm oxidised silver, deepening the recessed lines so that the narrative reads clearly even at this intimate scale. The pendant measures 1.20 inches in height by 0.55 inches in width (approximately 3.05 cm by 1.40 cm) and weighs a precise 2 grams. Wear it on a long black silk cord over a handloom cotton kurta for quiet, everyday devotion; or layer it against a Benarasi silk blouse on Navratri, where the oxidised silver will catch the candlelight with restrained intensity. At free size with standard proportions, the pendant sits comfortably at the sternum without feeling heavy. Its modest weight makes it suitable for daily wear, and sterling silver responds well to simple cloth polishing to maintain its depth.
