Description

The sun does not ask permission to illuminate; neither does this brooch. Rendered in warm, burnished brass, the Lord Surya Narayana Brooch draws from one of India's oldest iconographic traditions: the solar deity depicted in full resplendence, radiating prongs fanning outward like the first light of Uttarayana. At approximately 7.5 cm height by 5 cm width, the piece carries genuine visual weight, its 68 g form pressed and finished in the manner of devotional adornments long associated with temple jewellery conventions found across South India and Rajasthan alike. The brass ground, ungilded and honest, lends the motif an antique warmth that polished gold tone could never replicate. Every spoke, every contour of the deity's form speaks to the karigar's patient hand with the mould and the file, producing a relief that catches the light at every angle. Wear it pinned to the drape of a Benarasi silk sari at a festive puja gathering, or against the lapel of a structured cotton kurta at a heritage art exhibition, where its iconographic confidence will invite conversation rather than simply ornament. At free size and a satisfying 68 g, the brooch sits firmly with its standard pin fastening, distributing its weight comfortably across heavier woven fabrics. The brass develops a gentle patina over time, a quality that collectors of antique-finish pieces will recognise as an asset, not a flaw.
