Description

There are deities one wears close to the chest, and Narasimha, the lion-headed avatara who splits open the boundaries between worlds, is foremost among them. Cast in sterling silver, this pendant carries the fierce yet devotional image of Lord Narasimha in raised relief, the leonine face and powerful shoulders rendered with the kind of deliberate hand-finishing that belongs to India's long tradition of devotional silverwork. The form follows the iconographic grammar of Vaishnava temple sculpture: the half-man, half-lion silhouette held within a composed vertical frame measuring approximately 3.8 centimetres in height and 3.3 centimetres in width. At 10.1 grammes, the pendant carries real presence on the body without heaviness. The silver has a warm oxidised tone in the recessed areas, allowing every carved detail to read clearly against a brighter surface, a finishing technique that silversmiths across Jaipur and the devotional workshops of South India have long employed to give narrative depth to sacred subjects. Worn on a fine silver chain against a Kanjivaram silk blouse for a festival puja, it reads as an act of quiet reverence. Equally, it settles with understated conviction over a plain white cotton kurta for a day when one simply wants the anchor of faith near the heart. The pendant is free-size in its loop fitting, accommodating chains of varying thicknesses. The sterling silver finish is robust enough for regular wear and responds well to a soft cloth polish to retain its lustre.
