Description

Devotion, rendered in silver, small enough to rest quietly above the heart. Lakshmi Maa has been a presiding figure in Temple jewellery for centuries, her image carried in gold by the devadasis of Nagercoil and the goldsmiths of Tamil Nadu. Here, that same reverence is translated into sterling silver, a metal whose cool brightness suits the goddess of abundance with understated sincerity. The pendant follows the conventions of Temple iconography: the goddess seated or standing in her canonical posture, the form framed within a shaped surround that echoes the architectural mandapam from which the tradition takes its name. At one and a quarter inches in height (approximately 3.2 cm), the piece weighs just four grams, light enough that the silver never asserts itself over the sacred image it carries. The surface work relies on hand-pressed relief detailing, the silver catching and holding light along every contour. Worn on a fine sterling chain, this pendant pairs with a soft cotton Kanjeevaram salwar in ivory or gold for a festival morning puja. It moves just as comfortably with a silk blouse and contemporary separates when a diaspora wearer carries a quiet thread of home into a city evening. The free-size bail accommodates chains of varied widths, and the sterling silver construction requires only a light polish with a soft cloth to maintain its warm, satin finish. At four grams, it sits without weight against the collarbone through long days of wear.
