Description

There are rings, and then there are rings that ask to be noticed slowly. This Kundan ring is worked in brass, a metal long favoured by Rajasthani karigars for its warmth and its willingness to hold lac-set stones with the same firmness that gold affords. The Kundan technique, refined over centuries in the ateliers of Jaipur, involves pressing polished stones into a bed of refined lac, then folding fine foil-backed gold-tinted metal around each stone's girdle to hold it without prongs. The result is a setting that appears almost molten, as if the stones grew there of their own accord. The face of the ring is composed in the manner of a Mughal floral medallion, the central stone surrounded by a close ring of smaller set pieces, the whole surface flush and unbroken, richly coloured against the warm brass shank. Wear it with a silk kurta and pearl drops for a festive lunch, or pair it with a sari blouse in raw silk and minimal gold bangles for a wedding evening where one statement piece does all the speaking. At nine grams, the ring sits with reassuring presence on the finger without feeling heavy through a long occasion. The brass base gives it everyday resilience, and the lac setting, when treated with care and kept away from water, holds its colour and alignment season after season.
