Description

The colour of a winter twilight pressed into stone. Iolite carries within it one of the most quietly arresting hues in the gemologist's vocabulary: a blue that leans into violet depending on the light, shifting like the sea on an overcast afternoon. These square-cut gemstone beads, each measuring 6 x 6 mm, are sold in sets of five and belong to that category of lapidary work where the cutting itself is the craft. The square silhouette is precise and deliberate, allowing the stone's natural pleochroism, that rare optical quality through which iolite reveals blue, violet and a pale straw-gold from different angles, to speak without interference. No metal surrounds them here; the stone alone earns its place. Iolite has long been valued in traditional Indian gem-setting traditions, particularly in Jaipur's stone-cutting ateliers, where cutters learn to read a rough stone's optical axes before the first facet is drawn. A set of five allows a jeweller or an artistically inclined wearer to commission a bespoke necklace, spacing the squares along a fine gold or silver chain for a piece suited equally to a formal dinner in a silk chanderi sari or a quieter afternoon in linen with silver earrings. At 6 x 6 mm, each bead is substantial enough to register as a design element without overwhelming a slender neck. The square cut sits flat against the skin, making it practical for daily wear and straightforward to incorporate into both traditional and contemporary settings.
