Description

Shiva in five faces, held in silver, held in stillness. Panchamukha Sadashiva, the five-faced form of the eternal Shiva, appears here in hand-painted sterling silver, each face turned to a cardinal direction and the fifth lifted skyward, embodying the five elements and the five acts of creation. The painting technique, applied with the patience of miniature tradition, lays colour directly onto the silver surface, recalling the devotional craftsmanship of South Indian temple jewellery and the painted votive objects of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The pendant measures approximately six centimetres in height by just under six centimetres in width (2.4 inches by 2.25 inches) and carries a substantial weight of 17.3 grams, giving it a presence that reads as icon as much as ornament. The sterling silver ground is finished to a warm matte, framing the painted faces with the quiet authority of oxidised relief work. Wear it on a long antique silver chain against an ivory or off-white handloom kurta for a contemplative, gallery-ready look. For a ritual or festival occasion, it sits equally well at the throat of a Benarasi or a Kanjeevaram, the colour at the centre answering the silk's own richness. Free-sized and intended for a single bail fitting, this pendant suits most chain widths and requires no special care beyond keeping it away from prolonged moisture. The silver's weight ensures it hangs flush and does not turn, making it a piece one forgets one is wearing until someone asks about it.
