Description
Where Shiva and Shakti share one body, so too does this pendant hold two worlds in a single frame. Cast in sterling silver and finished by hand, the pendant depicts Ardhanarishvara, the composite deity who unites the masculine and the feminine in perfect equipoise. The left half carries the sinuous grace of Shakti, the right the austere stillness of Shiva, and between them the theological argument of centuries is resolved in less than a centimetre of worked metal. Hand-painting lends the piece its character, each stroke of colour applied directly onto the silver surface, a technique that echoes the miniature traditions of Rajasthan where devotional imagery and metalwork have long spoken to each other. At 1.9 grams, the pendant is light without feeling insubstantial, its small silhouette, measuring 0.9 inches (approximately 2.3 cm) in height and 0.7 inches (approximately 1.8 cm) in width, containing detail that rewards a close look. Wear it on a fine silver chain against a handloom cotton kurta for daily devotion, or thread it onto a black silk cord and let it sit at the collarbone with a Benarasi silk blouse for something more considered. The pendant moves easily between the personal and the celebratory. Sterling silver suits daily wear well, holding its lustre with minimal attention. The free-size bail accommodates most chain gauges, and the modest weight means the piece lies flat and stays in place throughout a long day.
