Description

She sits in sovereign stillness, the goddess Gajalakshmi enthroned upon an open lotus, flanked by her celestial elephants in an eternal gesture of abhisheka. Rendered in sterling silver, this pendant belongs to the long devotional tradition of South Indian votive jewellery, where the image of Lakshmi attended by elephants has adorned temple processional regalia and personal talismans alike. The silhouette is intimate yet iconographically precise: the goddess is seated in padmasana, her lotus throne rendered with layered petals, the flanking elephants poised mid-pour with upraised trunks. The silver carries a bright oxidised finish in the recessed relief, drawing the eye into each carved plane and giving the motif the quality of a miniature repousse study. Weighing eight grams and standing one and a quarter inches tall (approximately 3.2 cm), the pendant achieves genuine presence without heaviness, the kind of restrained scale that the finest Nagercoil and South Indian silverwork has always understood. Thread it onto a long antique silver chain over a deep-toned Kanjivaram or Chanderi silk for a festival puja or wedding celebration. Equally, it settles beautifully at the neckline of a simple ivory cotton kurta on any ordinary auspicious morning. The free-size pendant suits a standard bail and passes easily onto chains of varying gauges. The oxidised sterling silver requires only occasional gentle polishing to preserve its depth of tone, making it a quietly faithful piece for daily or devotional wear.
