Description

There are goddesses who do not need gold to glow. Chottanikkara Bhagavathi, the fierce and merciful form of Mahalakshmi enshrined at the famous Kerala temple of the same name, is rendered here in sterling silver with the kind of devotional exactness that belongs to the South Indian silversmithing tradition. The goddess is depicted in her full iconic form, her presence contained within a pendant that measures 2.1 inches in height by 1.45 inches in width (approximately 5.3 cm by 3.7 cm) and weighs a substantial 26.8 grams. Sterling silver, worked to this density, carries a cool luminosity that suits a deity associated with both abundance and protection. The raised relief casting honours every attribute of her iconography, the careful chasing of her features and adornments drawing on the temple jewellery conventions of Nagercoil and the broader Kerala silver craft lineage, where sacred imagery is treated as devotional act, not merely decoration. Wear this pendant on a long oxidised silver chain against a Kanjivaram silk for a festival or Navratri puja, or layer it simply over a white cotton kurta on auspicious Fridays, where its weight and presence speak without effort. At free size with a standard bail accommodating most chains, this pendant sits with natural authority at the chest. The sterling silver finish requires occasional gentle cleaning but rewards long wear with an honest, uncoated patina that deepens over years of use.
