Description

Stillness, cast in silver. The face of the Gautam Buddha has been a touchstone of Indian devotional art for centuries, rendered in stone at Sarnath, in bronze across the Deccan, and now in sterling silver with the quiet authority of the antique craft tradition. This pendant draws on that lineage. The silhouette, small and considered at 1.1 inches height by 0.6 inches width (approximately 2.8 cm by 1.5 cm), captures the hooded eyes, the ushnisha crown and the composed downward gaze that artists across Bengal and Odisha have refined over generations. Worked entirely in sterling silver and finished by hand with an oxidised patina, the piece weighs nine grams, substantial enough to feel present against the skin without pulling at the chain. The antique finish settles into every carved recess, sharpening the relief and giving the face its meditative depth. Wear it on a fine silver box chain over a plain white kurta for morning puja or a quiet gathering with family. It sits equally well against the neckline of a dark silk blouse beneath a handwoven saree, where the oxidised silver reads almost like an heirloom passed down through the house. The free-size bail accommodates most chain widths, and the sterling silver construction requires only occasional polishing with a soft cloth to restore its gentle lustre. A piece made for daily devotion, not only for occasion.
