Description

There are rivers older than memory, and the fish has always known their secrets. In many of India's silversmithing traditions, the matsya or fish form carries layered meaning: prosperity, fertility and the auspicious gaze of an ever-open eye. This pendant honours that symbolism through a quietly accomplished piece of sterling silver work. The fish silhouette is carved from a single smooth cabochon of chalcedony, its translucent cool grey-blue surface catching light in the manner of still water at dawn. The bezel setting that holds it is wrought in sterling silver, with a finish that reads as understated and contemporary while remaining rooted in craft. Measuring four centimetres tall by one and a half centimetres wide (1.6 by 0.65 inches), with a depth of just over a centimetre (0.4 inches), and weighing eight grams, the pendant sits close to the body without weight or fuss. Wear it on a fine sterling chain over a handwoven cotton kurta in ivory or indigo for daily elegance, or layer it against a silk sari blouse in powder blue to let the chalcedony echo the fabric. It moves between contemplative and celebratory without effort. The free-size bail accommodates chains of varying widths, making it easy to restyle across a jewellery wardrobe. Sterling silver at this gauge holds its shape well and polishes cleanly with a soft cloth, offering years of reliable, beautiful wear.
