Description

There are stones that carry the sky inside them, and lapis lazuli is chief among them. Cut into a heart silhouette and faceted so that each plane catches light at a slightly different angle, the deep Prussian-blue cabochon sits within a sterling silver bezel that follows the curve of the stone with quiet precision. The silver has been worked to a polished finish, allowing the metal to recede and let the stone speak. Lapis lazuli has travelled the ancient trade routes from the mines of Afghanistan through the workshops of Rajasthan and Bengal for centuries, its colour the blue that court painters once ground into pigment for manuscript illuminations. Here, that same mineral intensity is compressed into a pendant measuring 1.2 inches (approximately 3 cm) in height and 0.7 inches (approximately 1.8 cm) in width, weighing a considered 4 grams. The amethyst variant offers the same faceted heart form in a violet that reads equally well against silver. Wear this pendant with a silk kurta in ivory or deep teal on a festive evening, and the lapis holds its own against heavier embellishment. For a quieter register, layer it over a fine cotton dress on a Sunday afternoon and it becomes the only ornament the look requires. The free-size bail accommodates most chains. At 4 grams, the pendant sits flat against the collarbone without pulling. Sterling silver at this weight is sturdy enough for daily wear and responsive to a gentle buff with a soft cloth when needed.
