Description

There are stones that hold the sky inside them, and iolite is one. Cut into a clean faceted form and set in sterling silver, this pendant draws from a quietly Western lapidary tradition that Indian silversmiths have long made their own. The stone itself is the story: iolite shifts between violet, indigo and a smoky blue-grey depending on the light and the angle, a phenomenon gemologists call pleochroism and poets might simply call restlessness. The setting is slender and precise, framing the stone without crowding it, the kind of silverwork that lets the gem do its speaking. At 1.6 inches tall and 0.4 inches wide (approximately 4 cm by 1 cm), the pendant is elongated and spare, weighing just 3 grams against the collarbone, barely a whisper of metal. Wear it on a fine sterling chain over a pale Chanderi kurta in winter, where the iolite's indigo picks up the warp of the weave. It works equally well at an evening occasion, layered against a deep-plum silk blouse, where the stone reads almost amethyst under warm light. Sterling silver at this weight stays comfortable through a full day without pulling. The piece is free-sized and the pendant bail is made to accommodate chains of standard widths. A light polish with a soft cloth keeps the silver bright; storing it away from humidity slows any natural tarnish.
