Description
There are stones that do not merely catch the light; they hold it inside themselves, turning it violet-blue and strange. Iolite has been a traveller's stone for centuries, used by Norse navigators to read the sky. Here, that same mineral is cut into faceted beads and strung on a sterling silver chain, each bead a small prism that shifts between deep indigo and a softer, almost smoky periwinkle depending on the angle of the light. This is the property geologists call pleochroism, and it makes iolite unlike any other stone in a beaded setting. The chain itself is worked in sterling silver, the links and clasp kept deliberately quiet so that nothing distracts from the parade of colour running along its seventeen-inch (approximately 43 cm) length. Weighing only four grams in total, it sits close to the collarbone without weight or fuss. It is designed as a carrier for a pendant, the beads framing whatever hangs at the centre. Wear it with a pendant set in silver and white topaz against a fine cotton kurta for an afternoon gathering; or layer it beneath a silk blouse at an evening dinner, where the iolite reads almost like sapphire in candlelight. At seventeen inches (approximately 43 cm), this chain falls at the collarbone and suits most necklines without adjustment. The secure sterling silver clasp handles daily wear easily. A single free size serves most wearers, and the restrained weight makes it comfortable through long occasions.
