Description
There is something ancient in the colour of carnelian, a warmth borrowed from desert earth and kept alive in stone. Carnelian has been prized across the Indian subcontinent for millennia, turning up in the excavations of Harappa and in the bead-workers' lanes of Khambhat, Gujarat, where artisans have shaped this stone by hand for generations. This necklace honours that long tradition: each bead is individually faceted, its surfaces cut to catch light at shifting angles, deepening the stone's characteristic burnt-orange into something almost molten at the centre and translucent at the edges. The beads measure approximately one inch (roughly 2.5 cm) each, strung together into a 17-inch (approximately 43 cm) length that sits precisely at the collarbone. At 220 grams, the necklace carries a pleasing, settled weight, the kind that reminds you something real rests against your skin. Wear this over an ivory Chanderi kurta for a winter lunch, where the amber warmth of the stone reads as an heirloom pulled from a grandmother's jewellery box. For evening, layer it against a deep burgundy silk blouse, and let the facets do their quiet, luminous work in candlelight. The free-size string accommodates most necklines without adjustment. The faceted finish is smooth to the touch and resistant to the minor abrasions of daily wear. This is a piece that asks very little of you and offers, in return, a centuries-old conversation between hand, stone and light.
