Description
There is a particular joy in a ring that jingles softly as you move. This statement ring belongs to the folk-jewellery vocabulary of Rajasthan, where brass is the metal of honest craft and ghungroos are never merely decorative. A cluster of tiny brass bells sits at the crown of the ring, catching light and sound in equal measure. The face rises to a height of 1.5 cm (approximately), set with stone in either deep purple or ivory white, the colour chosen before the karigars in ateliers across Jaipur press each piece into its bezel setting. The stone sits flat against a broad, structured base, the surrounding brass finished to a warm, burnished tone that suits the folkloric spirit of the design. Sizes 8 and 9 are available, with the purple variant carrying a slightly more generous face at 1.5 inches (3.81 cm) height against the 1.45 inches (3.68 cm) of the white. The ghungroos hang in a neat fringe beneath, lending the whole piece a festive, almost theatrical presence. Wear the purple stone with a cotton bandhani kurta at a daytime pooja or mehendi gathering. The white works equally well slipped onto the finger over a cream silk blouse for a more restrained festive look. At 18 grams, the ring settles with reassuring substance without feeling cumbersome. Brass wears best kept away from water and perfume, and benefits from an occasional soft polish to maintain its warm glow.
