Description

There are geometries that carry memory, and Tarakasi knows this well. Odisha's filigree tradition, practised in the silversmith quarters of Cuttack for centuries, is one of India's most exacting crafts. Tarakasi, meaning "drawn wire work," asks a karigar to pull fine sterling silver into threads barely wider than a hair, then coil, bend and solder each strand by hand into forms of extraordinary delicacy. This pendant draws its inspiration from the chakra, that ancient symbol of cosmic motion and balance. The circular silhouette, measuring 2.15 inches (5.46 cm) in height and 1.2 inches (3.05 cm) in width, is constructed entirely from open lacework, with concentric rings of twisted silver wire emanating from a central axis in the manner of a wheel in perpetual stillness. Weighing just 8.92 grams, it is wrought in sterling silver, left unplated to preserve the quiet, cool lustre natural to the metal. There are no set stones; the craft itself is the ornament. Wear it over a white handloom kurta for an afternoon of quiet significance, letting the silver's natural tone speak against undyed cloth. For an evening occasion, it rests beautifully at the collar of a silk blouse beneath a Banarasi sari, its open lattice catching candlelight without competing with embellishment. The pendant is free-sized and loops onto its chain without a cumbersome clasp. Sterling silver develops a gentle patina with wear; a soft cloth restores its original brightness in moments.
