Description

There are elephants rendered in gold, and then there are elephants that remember everything. Cast in warm brass and finished to a burnished, antique-toned glow, this brooch presents the royal elephant in full ceremonial regalia: a broad, majestic silhouette measuring approximately 6.1 cm in height and 6.4 cm in width, with a weight of 42 grams that gives it the satisfying heft of something made to be noticed. The motif draws from a long tradition of elephant iconography in Indian decorative metalwork, where the animal signifies sovereignty, auspiciousness and the grandeur of courtly procession. Worked in brass rather than precious metal, the piece belongs to a lineage of folk and craft jewellery produced across Rajasthan and Bengal, where karigar communities have long shaped base metals into objects of genuine beauty. The surface detail suggests repoussé-style relief work, with the elephant's caparisoned form carrying the visual weight of a larger, more ceremonial ornament. Pin it at the lapel of a raw-silk kurta for a literary festival or heritage walk; or anchor it to the breast pocket of a cream linen blazer at a gallery opening, where it becomes the only adornment needed. A standard free-size brooch pin at the reverse makes fastening straightforward on most fabrics. The brass construction resists everyday wear well; keep it away from moisture and store it wrapped in a soft cloth to preserve the warm, aged finish.
