Description

A rakodi carries the weight of ceremony in the lightest possible way. Worn at the crown of a plait or the meeting point of a parting, this circular hair brooch traces a tradition that stretches from the temple towns of Nagercoil to the bridal lanes of Rajasthan, where the rakodi has long served as the final, considered flourish of a dressed head. Worked in polished metal, the piece measures approximately 6.86 cm in diameter and weighs a substantial 48.4 g, giving it the satisfying presence of a proper adornment rather than an afterthought. The circular silhouette is composed with deliberate symmetry, its surface relief catching light in the way that only hand-finished metal work does. The design draws on the vocabulary of traditional Indian hair jewellery: layered petal forms, a centred focal point, and an outer border that frames the whole with confident proportion. A pin-and-clasp mechanism secures it cleanly into braided or pinned hair without pulling. Wear it at the base of a jasmine-threaded plait for a South Indian wedding reception, or anchor it at the crown of a low bun paired with a silk Kanjivaram and restrained gold ear studs. For a festive mehendi afternoon, let it sit over a loose, half-pinned braid with mirror-work kurta and oxidised bangles. Free-sized by nature and universally flattering across hair types and textures, this rakodi requires no special care beyond a soft cloth wipe. Its metal finish resists daily handling well, making it a piece you will reach for again.
