Description

There are devotions that do not require a temple, only a piece worn close to the heart. Cast in brass and finished to a warm, oxidised patina, this brooch renders Adiyogi Shiva as a bust portrait: the third eye serene at the brow, the trishul rising behind the shoulders, and a garland of rudraksha beads framing the neck. The motif belongs to a long tradition of devotional metalwork produced across the temples of South India and the pilgrim-town workshops of the Deccan, where brass has always been the preferred medium for sacred imagery, its golden warmth ageing gracefully with wear. At 2.05 inches (approximately 5.2 cm) in height and 1.15 inches (approximately 2.9 cm) in width, the relief is compact yet surprisingly articulate in its detail, weighing just 11 grams against the cloth. Pin this at the centre of a raw-silk kurta for a puja or cultural gathering, where it reads as both jewellery and quiet statement of faith. It works equally well fixed to the lapel of a cream linen jacket for a curator's opening or literary evening, the oxidised brass holding its own against contemporary dress. The brooch is free size, secured by a standard pin-back closure that sits flush and holds firmly through the day without pulling at fine fabric. Brass develops a deeper, richer tone with time and handling, which is, in this tradition, considered a mark of a well-loved object rather than a flaw.
