Behind this piece
Kosa silk is drawn from the cocoons of the Antheraea mylitta silkworm, which feeds on the arjun and sal trees of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Unlike cultivated mulberry silk, Kosa carries a natural, slightly rough texture and a characteristic warm lustre that no dye or finish can replicate. The weaving tradition belongs to the Devangan and Kostha communities, who have practised this craft across generations in the forested belt of central India. The yellow-cream body of this sari is not a colour choice; it is the silk speaking in its own voice, undyed and unhurried.
How to style
For a morning wedding ritual or a festival like Makar Sankranti, wear this sari with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in deep turmeric and layer it with a single strand of unpolished gold beads. On quieter occasions, a fitted full-sleeved blouse in ivory cotton linen keeps the look considered without competing. For a cultural evening or art gathering, drape it in a Nivi style, pair it with beaten-silver jhumkas from Odisha, and choose kolhapuri chappals in tan leather. Each of these combinations lets the woven stripes on the pallu remain the composition's quiet centrepiece.
Fabric & care
Kosa silk is a resilient fibre but it rewards careful handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently, then press between two dry cotton towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows raw silk over time. Steam-press on a low setting with a thin cotton cloth placed between the iron and the sari. Store folded inside a soft muslin cloth, not a plastic bag. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines forming along the weave.
