the story,

Behind this piece

Ikat is one of India's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, and cotton ikat holds a particular place in the weaving histories of Telangana and Odisha. In this saree, the technique reveals itself in the characteristic soft-edged motifs: a pair of peacocks rendered in the warp and weft before the loom is even dressed. The rudraksha border, a sacred bead pattern long associated with devotional textiles, frames the field with quiet authority. Tri-colour ikat demands precise pre-dye alignment from the weaver, and the slight feathering at each motif edge is not imperfection; it is proof of the hand.

to wear it,

How to style

For a morning cultural event or literary gathering, pair this saree with a short-sleeved raw silk blouse in one of the saree's ground colours, flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan, and oxidised silver earrings with peacock motifs that echo the woven birds. For a relaxed afternoon, drape it with a simple cotton blouse and wooden bangles. Evening occasions call for a sleeveless brocade blouse in ivory, low block-heeled juttis, and a single temple-gold pendant. The tri-colour palette allows each blouse choice to draw out a different mood entirely.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton ikat benefits from a gentle first wash in cold water with a mild, ph-neutral detergent, rinsed without wringing. Hand wash is strongly preferred; machine washing weakens the pre-dyed yarns over time and blurs the crisp ikat edges. Dry flat in shade to prevent uneven colour fading across the three tones. Do not soak for longer than five minutes. Steam iron on a medium-low setting while the fabric retains slight dampness. Store folded in a soft cotton muslin bag, away from direct sunlight, and refold along a different line every few months to prevent permanent crease marks.
