about the piece,

Description

There are weaves that cool the skin and calm the eye, and Jamdani is among the most quietly miraculous of them all. Originating in the looms of Bengal, this pure cotton saree carries the living tradition of supplementary-weft weaving, a craft recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The weavers work without a cartoon or stencil, counting threads by hand and building each motif directly into the body of the cloth as it grows on the loom. The result is a fabric of extraordinary lightness, its surface animated by intricate geometric and floral patterns that seem almost to float between the weave. Offered in absinthe green and lucent white, both colours speak to the saree's natural kinship with open air, afternoon light, and the unhurried tempo of summer. Drape it for a cultural gathering or a festive lunch where understated elegance is its own statement. Pair it with unpolished silver jewellery and a fine cotton blouse in ivory or deep green to let the weave remain the undisputed centre of attention.

the story,

Behind this piece

Jamdani is among the oldest continuous weaving traditions on earth, its origins traced to the looms of Dhaka and the riverine delta where Bengal's humid air kept fine cotton threads from snapping under tension. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, the fabric is woven on a pit loom, with supplementary weft threads floated by hand to build each motif directly into the ground cloth. No printing, no embroidery. Only the shuttle and the weaver's count. This summer saree carries that discipline in absinthe green and lucent white, light enough to breathe in the season's fullest heat.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the absinthe green with an unstitched ivory cotton blouse and kolhapuri flats for a weekend farmer's market or a daytime puja. For a gallery opening or literary afternoon, tuck the lucent white into a structured sleeveless blouse in natural linen and finish with oxidised silver hoops and juttis in nude leather. The green also pairs beautifully with a deep forest-toned blouse and gold kada bracelets for a summer wedding lunch. Both colours accept colour-blocked blouses generously. Keep accessories spare; the woven geometry asks for very little competition.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand wash separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Cotton at this count bleeds if agitated roughly, so squeeze gently without wringing. Never soak for longer than five minutes. Dry flat in shade to prevent the fine weave from distorting under its own weight. Do not tumble dry. Once dry, iron on a medium cotton setting on the reverse side to protect the supplementary weft floats that form the motifs. Store folded in soft muslin, away from direct light. Refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease marks along the same threads.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
