the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valley's workshops and home ateliers. Worked onto georgette rather than the traditional pashmina or velvet, this saree tests a needle-worker's control: the fabric shifts, the hand must not. The madder-brown ground, warm as October walnut groves above Srinagar, is traced with flowering vines along the border and anchal, each petal formed by a continuous chain of looped thread. It is slow, considered work, shaped by a discipline that the Kashmir valley has guarded for generations.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree at a winter wedding reception with a full-sleeved, ivory silk blouse in a subtle self-stripe, keeping the embroidery central. Pair with Kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan leather and unpolished silver jewellery, a Rajasthani thewa or tribal cuff, to honour the craft without crowding it. For a festive daytime gathering, drape it in the Gujarati seedha pallu style and add a raw-silk potli in rust. Come evening, a simple gathered chignon, a thin gold necklace, and pointed kitten heels in deep burgundy bring the madder-brown into full, composed authority.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a delicate crepe weave that loosens under heat and rough handling. Hand-wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, submerging the saree gently without wringing or twisting. The aari embroidery is worked in thread that can catch and pull, so turn the saree inward before washing. Dry flat in shade, never on a direct line in sunlight, which fades madder tones. Iron on the reverse at a low-heat silk setting, placing a thin cotton cloth between iron and embroidery. Store rolled in a clean muslin cloth, away from cedar, which can transfer colour.
