Violet-Tulle Pure Wool Stole from Kashmir with Aari Hand-Embroidered Flowers All-Over
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
Violet dreams made tangible, carried on the lightest breath of Kashmir wool. Woven from pure wool into an airy tulle weave, this stole possesses a translucency that is rare among woollen textiles, allowing the fabric to float rather than drape. Across its violet field, Kashmiri artisans have worked the Aari technique, drawing a hooked needle through the ground in continuous chain-stitch loops to build each flower with quiet precision. The Aari craft belongs to a long lineage of embroiderers centred in the Kashmir Valley, where the discipline of the needle is passed through generations much as the discipline of the loom is. Flowers bloom from edge to edge in an all-over arrangement that respects the textile as a whole rather than treating embroidery as mere ornament. The result is a piece that honours both the material and the maker's sustained attention. Wear it loose over a pale ivory kurta to let the violet carry its full weight, or fold it into a narrow wrap against a winter shawl for a quietly layered effect.

Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle that Kashmir's craftsmen have wielded for centuries, drawing thread through fabric in a continuous chain of loops. On this stole, the technique finds its most lyrical expression: wool flowers bloom across violet tulle in a density of stitch that speaks of long apprenticeships and patient hands. The pairing of sheer tulle with the warmth of pure wool is itself a Kashmiri invention, a fabric conversation between delicacy and substance. Each petal is placed by eye, no mechanical repetition, only the rhythm of a craftsman who knows the flower before he embroiders it.
How to style
Lay this stole over a pale ivory Lucknowi chikankari kurta for a summer wedding, letting the violet do the work of colour so the embroidery on both layers converses quietly. For an evening occasion, drape it over a column-cut silk saree in deep plum or charcoal and anchor it with a single kundan brooch at the shoulder. Come autumn in a cooler city, knot it loosely over a camel-toned merino coat with tan mojris and a structured potli bag. In all three instances, keep the earrings small: the stole earns its own attention.
Fabric & care
Pure wool is a living fibre and rewards gentle handling. Hand-wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric as this distorts the embroidered motifs. Rinse once in cool water and press flat between two clean towels to remove moisture, then dry on a horizontal surface away from direct sunlight to prevent the violet tones from fading. Iron on the reverse side using a low wool setting with a pressing cloth. Store folded with a cedar block, never on a hanger, to preserve the drape and guard against moth.
