the story,

Behind this piece

Muga silk is native to Assam's Brahmaputra valley, spun from the cocoons of the semi-wild Antheraea assamensis silkworm, which feeds exclusively on som and sualu leaves. Its name derives from the Assamese word for amber, and the fibre is singular in the natural world: it grows more lustrous with every wash. The woven bootis scattered across this saree echo motifs drawn from Assamese folk tradition, while the patch border grounds the textile in a structured, ceremonial formality. Frosted Almond and Gilded Beige are not colours chosen; they are colours grown, inherent to the fibre itself.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree in a traditional Assamese drape, paired with a full-sleeved ivory silk blouse, for Bihu celebrations or a curated festive gathering. For a quieter occasion, a sleeveless blouse in raw mushroom-toned cotton keeps the muga's warmth centre stage. Complement with beaten silver jewellery from Assam's traditional crafts, particularly dokra-style cuffs or oxidised jhumkas, rather than gold, which competes. Slip-on kolhapuris in tan or a pair of handwoven Assamese japi-motif flats complete the register of considered, regional dressing without effort or artifice.

to last,

Fabric & care

Muga silk requires patient handling. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral liquid, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Rinse once, gently press water out by rolling the saree inside a clean cotton towel, and dry flat in the shade. Direct sunlight bleaches the natural amber tone over time. Steam rather than iron, keeping the heat setting low. Store folded in a soft cotton muslin cloth, away from synthetic materials and moisture. Muga, uniquely among silks, strengthens and deepens in lustre with careful, repeated wearing; longevity here is a feature of the fibre.
