the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, which Kashmiri craftsmen draw through wool with a rhythmic, almost meditative pull. This shawl carries a jaal pattern, a latticed all-over field of floral motifs that has covered Kashmiri textiles since the Mughal courts valued them above most earthly luxuries. The multicoloured florals here are not printed but stitched, each petal placed by hand in the workshops of the Valley. Wool from the region lends the base a quiet warmth, and the density of the embroidery makes this a document of patience as much as a garment.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this shawl over a ivory or ecru kurta set for a winter wedding guest look, and anchor it with oxidised silver earrings from Rajasthan. For a quieter occasion, layer it across the shoulders of a deep teal or bottle-green anarkali, letting the multicoloured jaal do the talking. Diaspora wearers might fold it as a wide wrap over a cream turtleneck and wide-leg trousers, finishing with kolhapuris or leather block-heeled boots. The richness of the embroidery means the rest of the outfit can stay deliberately understated.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash this woollen shawl in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent formulated for delicate fibres. Never wring or twist; press water out gently between two dry towels and reshape flat to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight which fades the hand-stitched colours. Do not tumble-dry or iron directly over the embroidery. Before storing, ensure the shawl is completely dry, then fold loosely in acid-free tissue or a breathable cotton muslin bag. Place dried neem leaves or cedar blocks nearby to deter moths. Stored with care, this piece deepens in character over years.
