Behind this piece
Tamil Nadu's temple towns have long been centres of devotional weaving, where the loom becomes an act of prayer in itself. This shawl carries the sacred invocation "Om Namo Venkatesaya Namaha" woven directly into the body of the fabric, alongside Vaishnava symbols drawn from the iconographic tradition of the Tirupati shrine. The brocading technique, built on art silk, echoes the zari-threaded votive textiles historically offered at Divya Desam temples. Each repeat of the mantra is not printed but structurally woven, making the devotion inseparable from the cloth itself.
How to style
Drape the Flame Scarlet or Tango Red over a silk Kanjeevaram saree for Vaikuntha Ekadashi or Brahmotsavam attendance; the mantra border frames the pallu beautifully. In Mediterranean Blue or Tillandsia Purple, it pairs with a plain Mysore crepe silk kurta and antique silver Lakshmi pendant for a temple visit that reads quietly devotional. For diaspora celebrations such as a home puja or Diwali gathering, the Mandarin Orange colourway worn over ivory cotton coordinates with gold Kolhapuri sandals and a single temple-set choker.
Fabric & care
Art silk carries the lustre of pure silk but requires measured handling. Hand wash in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse once, then press flat between two clean cotton towels to remove excess moisture. Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can shift the colour over time. Iron on a low silk setting with a pressing cloth placed between iron and fabric. Store folded in muslin or acid-free tissue, never in plastic, to allow the fibres to breathe and the brocade structure to hold its form.
