the story,

Behind this piece

Odisha's sacred printing traditions stretch back centuries, rooted in the devotional culture surrounding the Jagannath temple at Puri. This shawl carries the holy triad: Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra, rendered in the bold, graphic idiom that Odishan artisans have long used to translate temple iconography into wearable form. Cotton was the fabric of pilgrims and priests alike, chosen for its humility and breathability in the coastal Odishan climate. Wearing this shawl is, in its quiet way, an act of devotion carried beyond the temple threshold and into everyday life.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape it loosely over a white cotton kurta for a contemplative, temple-town aesthetic, grounding the look with flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather. For a more composed ensemble, fold it lengthwise and wear it as a stole over a plain ivory salwar suit, adding a single terracotta bead necklace. At home prayer gatherings or Rath Yatra celebrations, wrap it shawl-style over a simple cotton saree; the printed triad becomes a focal point of quiet reverence. Let the shawl carry the ornamentation; keep everything else understated.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the printed face turned inward to protect the pigment. Do not soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged immersion can lift block-printed or screen-printed inks on unfinished cotton. Rinse thoroughly, then press between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sunlight, which causes cotton fibres to stiffen and colours to fade unevenly. Store folded, not hung, wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. With gentle handling, this shawl will only grow softer and more beautiful over years of use.
