the story,

Behind this piece

Uppada silk originates from the coastal village of Uppada in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, where weavers have practised the jamdani-influenced technique of weaving the zari directly into the fabric rather than overlaying it. The result is a textile of remarkable lightness, surprising given the presence of real zari. This saree carries that tradition forward in campanula blue and rococco red, both colours reading differently in morning and evening light. The self-weave body, disciplined in its restraint, yields to the zari-woven pallu with the quiet logic of a sentence that saves its finest word for last.

to wear it,

How to style

For a daytime cultural event or a family puja, pair this saree with a raw silk blouse in ivory or deep gold and wear it in the Nivi drape to let the pallu fall openly. Silver temple jewellery, specifically a broad cuff and long chain, suits the campanula blue. For the rococco red, consider antique gold jhumkas and a kundan tikka. A low bun with jasmine keeps the look grounded rather than costumed. On the feet, block-heeled kolhapuris in tan leather carry the ensemble without competing with the weave.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk demands respect rather than routine. Dry-clean this saree after every two or three wears; do not hand-wash, as water weakens zari over time and can shift the weft structure of Uppada's fine weave. Between wears, fold along the original creases, wrap loosely in a soft muslin cloth, and store flat rather than on a hanger. Keep neem leaves or cedar sachets nearby to discourage insects. Air the saree in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades both the silk and the zari. Stored with care, this fabric will outlast decades.
