about the piece,

Description

Some textiles ask to be worn in silence, slowly, the way one reads a poem worth keeping. This shawl is woven from tusha wool, the finest grade of Kashmiri fleece, known for its gossamer weight and the way it holds warmth without heaviness. Across its surface, Sozni needlework unfolds in multicolour floral vines, each tendril stitched by hand in the centuries-old tradition of the Kashmir Valley, where the embroidery needle moves with a patience that no machine has ever learned to imitate. Sozni is a single-needle technique, worked from the reverse side of the cloth, and it demands years of apprenticeship before a craftsman earns the sureness of line visible here. The result is a shawl that breathes, drapes, and carries within it the accumulated knowledge of a living craft. Available in Celestial Blue, Phantom Black, and Twilight Blue, each colourway lends the vines a different temperament, festive or contemplative, vivid or quietly authoritative. Wear it over a silk kurta at a winter wedding, or folded across the shoulders on a cool evening when the occasion deserves something considered and rare.

the story,

Behind this piece

Tusha wool is among the most coveted fibres to emerge from the Kashmir Valley, finer even than pashmina, combed from the underbelly of the Changthangi goat in the high-altitude Changthang plateau. Upon this cloud-weight ground, Kashmiri artisans have worked the ancient Sozni needle, a single-thread technique of extraordinary delicacy practiced across generations in the old craft quarters of Srinagar. The multicolour floral vines that travel across this shawl belong to a vocabulary of garden imagery refined over centuries, each petal and tendril demanding hours of patient, unhurried work from a skilled soznikaar.

to wear it,

How to style

Draped over a winter-ivory Lucknowi chikankari kurta set, this shawl becomes the singular statement of an evening gathering. For festive occasions, let it fall loosely over a deep wine Banarasi silk saree, allowing the multicolour vines to converse with the zari. The celestial blue or twilight blue colourway pairs especially well with oxidised silver jewellery and Kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. For a contemporary diaspora wardrobe, try it belted gently over a long cashmere coat in camel or charcoal, worn to a winter cultural event or a formal dinner.

to last,

Fabric & care

Tusha wool is exceptionally fine and requires the gentlest handling. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral shampoo or specialised wool wash, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Press the water out softly and dry flat on a clean cotton towel, away from direct sunlight or heat. Iron only on the lowest wool setting with a pressing cloth between iron and embroidery. Store folded, never hung, in a breathable muslin bag with a natural cedar block to deter moths. With proper care, a Sozni tusha shawl remains a heirloom across generations.
