Behind this piece
Patola is one of India's most rigorously geometric textile traditions, originating in Patan, Gujarat, where it was historically woven for royalty, temple offerings, and auspicious ceremony. The double-ikat technique, in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving, demands extraordinary precision; a single mis-aligned thread disrupts the entire pattern. This art silk interpretation honours that visual language: the sun-orange ground carries the iconic auspicious motifs drawn from centuries of Salvi community craft, while the golden thread floral border echoes the ceremonial weight that Patola has carried across generations of South Asian textile history.
How to style
For a wedding reception, pair this saree with a raw-silk ivory blouse in a deep V-back, gold Kolhapuri heels, and temple-work earrings in antique gold. For a festive daytime gathering, try a full-sleeved brocade blouse in ivory or cream and finish with oxidised silver bangles stacked at the wrist. For a cultural evening or classical performance, drape it in the traditional Gujarati seedha-pallu style, pair with a short-sleeved blouse in matching orange, and keep jewellery restrained: a single polki pendant and fine gold jhumkas will let the weave speak.
Fabric & care
Art silk carries a luminous drape but rewards careful handling. Hand-wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently and roll the saree in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water before laying it flat to dry in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the sun-orange ground over time. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth rather than plastic, away from moisture and sharp objects. Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creasing along the same edges.
