Behind this piece
Madhubani painting originates in the Mithila region of Bihar, where women have adorned walls, floors, and cloth with sacred imagery for centuries. Practiced across communities including the Brahmin and Kayastha households of Madhubani district, the art was long considered a domestic ritual before it became a recognised textile tradition. This khadi cotton saree carries that lineage in its hand-painted fish and floral motifs, rendered in the characteristic two-dimensional style with bold outlines and interior fill. Fish, in Mithila iconography, carry auspicious meaning, associated with fertility, abundance, and the blessings of Goddess Ganga.
How to style
Wear this saree in a casual Nivi drape to a daytime literary event or heritage craft fair, paired with a raw silk blouse in deep ochre or ivory. For evening, a backless blouse in matching cotton elevates it without competing with the painted surface. Complement with oxidised silver jewellery: long jhumkas and a simple bangle stack work beautifully. Kolhapuri chappals or block-printed juttis complete the look with regional coherence. The khadi texture holds a relaxed pleat, making it ideal for long hours on foot without sacrificing elegance.
Fabric & care
Hand wash this saree separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. The hand-painted motifs require gentle handling; avoid scrubbing the painted surface directly. Do not wring. Roll in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade to prevent the khadi from distorting. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side only, to protect the painted details. Store folded in a cotton muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and moisture. With attentive care, khadi cotton deepens in character with every wash.
