about the piece,

Description

Quiet as morning fog over a mountain valley, this shawl carries within it the slow devotion of the needle. Worked entirely in thread embroidery across a ground of fine wool, the design unfolds in an all-over arrangement of classic paisleys and floral leaves, each motif traced with the steady patience that distinguishes the embroidered shawl traditions of the Kashmir valley. The wool itself is supple and warm, draping with the kind of weight that settles rather than stiffens, a quality that comes from wool chosen with care for its fineness and hand. Oyster gray, that most contemplative of non-colours, allows the embroidery to hold the eye without competing with it, the thread catching light in subtle variation against the muted ground. It is a piece suited equally to a winter evening gathering and to the considered simplicity of everyday wear, where restraint itself becomes a kind of elegance. Drape it over a plain ivory or deep charcoal kurta and let the embroidery speak without interruption. It also pairs beautifully with a silk blouse and tailored trousers for occasions that call for something understated yet unmistakably considered.

the story,

Behind this piece

The paisley motif carries centuries of memory within it. Known as *keri* or mango buti across the subcontinent, it travelled from Kashmiri shawl looms to Persian courts and back again, never quite belonging to one place alone. This shawl honours that restless beauty through thread embroidery worked all over a wool ground, each floral leaf and curved teardrop shape placed with deliberate care. The wool itself speaks of highland flocks and winter altitude. Four colourways, from the pale warmth of Almond Milk to the absolute depth of Black Onyx, each reframe the same pattern as an entirely different object.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape the Oyster Gray colourway over a charcoal bandhgala suit for a winter wedding reception; the muted ground lets the embroidery surface gradually under candlelight. The Portabella tone works beautifully folded as a stole over an ivory Chanderi kurta set, finished with oxidised silver jhumkas and block-printed juttis. For everyday wear, wrap the Almond Milk piece loosely over a fine merino rollneck and tailored trousers, anchored with a topaz ring and leather ankle boots. All four shades companion well with unpolished, artisanal jewellery rather than anything overly bright or faceted.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wool retains its character longest when treated with restraint. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, working gently without wringing or twisting the fabric. Rinse thoroughly, then press out excess water between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, reshaping while damp. Never hang a wet wool shawl; the weight distorts the weave. Store folded in breathable cotton muslin, away from direct light and moisture. For seasonal storage, add dried neem leaves or cedar to deter moth damage. With this care, the embroidery and the wool ground will remain intact for many years of wear.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
