the story,

Behind this piece

Woven in the ancient looms of Varanasi, this saree belongs to the living tradition of Banarasi silk weaving, a craft that has flourished along the Ganga's banks since the Mughal period. The interplay of sea green and magenta pink reflects the Banarasi weaver's intuitive understanding of colour contrast, a sensibility refined across generations. The golden zari motifs, worked into the fabric with fine metallic thread, draw from a vocabulary of florals and geometrics that once adorned the courts of Awadh. Each motif is interlaced into the silk rather than printed or embroidered onto it.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding, pair this saree with a deep burgundy or ivory raw silk blouse to ground the sea green without competing with the magenta border. Add antique gold temple jewellery, preferably a choker with matching jhumkas, and block-heeled khussa in gold brocade. For a festive afternoon occasion, a sleeveless blouse in magenta tissue silk draws the border colour upward elegantly. At a formal cultural event, drape it in the classic Nivi style and keep accessories minimal: a single gold kada and low, strappy sandals in nude leather allow the zari to speak.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk Banarasi fabric requires dry cleaning for any significant soiling. For light freshening, air the saree in shade, never in direct sunlight, which weakens silk fibres and oxidises zari over time. Never wring or machine wash. Store the saree folded in pure cotton muslin, not plastic, which traps moisture and causes the zari to tarnish. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. Place a small packet of silica gel in the storage box to control humidity. With proper care, a Banarasi silk saree remains wearable and luminous across decades.
