Behind this piece
Chanderi has woven its gossamer silks and cottons in the heart of Madhya Pradesh for over five centuries, its looms patronised by Mughal courts and Maratha nobility alike. This saree belongs to that lineage. Spun from pure cotton-silk, it carries the characteristic translucence Chanderi is celebrated for, while the woven bootis scattered across its field speak to a decorative grammar refined over generations. The river-blue ground recalls the Betwa, which flows near the town itself, and the small repeating motifs are a quiet testament to the weavers' patience and precision.
How to style
Pair this saree with an ivory raw-silk blouse, cut sleeveless and deep-backed, for a summer wedding or a daytime arts event. Let the cotton-silk breathe by keeping the drape light and fluid. For jewellery, choose silver jhumkas with a single strand of freshwater pearls; avoid heavy gold, which competes with the fabric's delicacy. Kolhapuri flats in tan leather or strappy block-heeled sandals in nude finish the look with quiet confidence. For a heritage luncheon, tuck in a silk clutch in ivory or pale gold and let the saree lead entirely.
Fabric & care
Dry-clean this saree for its first wash to preserve the woven bootis and the lustre of the cotton-silk blend. Thereafter, hand-wash separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; do not wring or scrub. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then air-dry in shade, never in direct sunlight, which can alter the river-blue tone over time. Iron on a low silk setting while slightly damp, always on the reverse side. Store folded in soft muslin, away from cedar balls, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent creasing.
