Behind this piece
Kumbakonam, nestled along the Kaveri delta in Tamil Nadu, has long been a sanctum of temple silk weaving. The town's weavers have historically produced textiles intended for sacred offerings and royal courts, where gold was not decoration but devotion made visible. This saree carries that lineage in its all-over zari brocaded floral jaal, a latticed repeat of florals and paisleys that recalls the architectural grammar of Chola mandapams. The wide, commanding border grounds the composition in ceremony. Woven in art silk threaded with metallic zari, it translates an ancient idiom into a form accessible to modern brides.
How to style
For a south Indian wedding reception, pair this saree with a contrast silk blouse in deep burgundy or forest green, finished with gold-trimmed sleeves. Temple-style jewellery, particularly a long Kasu mala and matching jhumkas, will echo the saree's devotional aesthetic. For a mehendi or sangeet, style it with an unstitched blouse in raw silk and block-heeled kolhapuris in bronze. Diaspora brides attending a wedding abroad may drape it in the Nivi style with a structured petticoat, anchoring the look with Kondapalli-style gold bangles and a simple potli bag.
Fabric & care
Art silk, a woven viscose fibre, requires gentleness above all else. Hand wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum. Never wring; instead, press the fabric gently between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can dull the metallic zari over time. Once fully dry, fold along the original pleats and store wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture. Ironed on a low-heat silk setting, the zari will retain its lustre across many seasons.
