about the piece,

Description

There are colours that do not merely please the eye but settle quietly into memory, and this sari is one such rarity. Woven in the Nashik and Yeola belts of Maharashtra, where Paithani silk has been a bridal and ceremonial treasure for over two thousand years, this sari is built on a ground of deep, luminous purple that carries the particular warmth only pure mulberry silk can offer. The aanchal is where the weaver's patience becomes visible: each peacock is rendered in the traditional ekdhoti technique, the bird's plumage interlaced thread by thread until the figure holds both movement and stillness at once. A fine zari border frames the body, its gold a quietly confident counterpoint to the violet ground. The result is a sari suited to a wedding, a milestone celebration, or any occasion that deserves something made with unhurried devotion. Pair it with a raw silk blouse in deep gold or ivory to let the aanchal speak without competition. Simple polki jewellery and hair worn back will hold the sari's ceremony without crowding it.

the story,

Behind this piece

Paithani is among India's most storied silk traditions, woven in Paithan, a town on the banks of the Godavari in Maharashtra. Once treasured in the courts of the Satavahana dynasty, it travelled through centuries of patronage to remain alive in the hands of Yeola's master weavers. The defining mark of a true Paithani is its hand-woven aanchal, where each peacock is built feather by feather using the tapestry technique. On this sari, the deep purple ground carries that ancient geometry, and the peacocks on the border hold every hour of the weaver's counted concentration.

to wear it,

How to style

For a wedding reception, pair this sari with a raw silk or tissue blouse in deep gold or teal, and finish with temple-set jadau earrings and a polki choker. For a festival like Diwali or Ganesh Chaturthi, a simple antique gold pendant and kolhapuri heels let the aanchal do its full work. For a cultural evening or a formal dinner, drape it in the Nauvari style to honour its Maharashtrian origins, and add oxidised silver bangles stacked to the mid-forearm for a look that is grounded and quietly striking.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre that rewards patience. Dry-clean this sari after every wear to preserve the zari borders and the integrity of the hand-woven tapestry aanchal. If hand-washing at home is necessary, use cool water with a capful of mild, pH-neutral cleanser, and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay it flat on a clean cotton cloth to dry, away from direct sunlight, which fades purple tones quickly. Fold along the original pressed lines, interleave with acid-free tissue, and store in a muslin bag. Air it gently every few months.
