Behind this piece
The needle moves slowly across the loom-woven wool, tracing petals and leaves in heavy thread that catches light like topography. This is the tradition of Kashmiri sozni and its bolder cousin, the heavily worked shawl that emerged from the workshops of the Kashmir Valley, where embroiderers have spent generations perfecting the grammar of floral repeat. The apricot ground recalls the saffron orchards of Pampore; the black carries the gravity of formal Dogra dress. Each motif is a studied conversation between the weaver's intention and the wool's natural resistance to the needle.
How to style
Drape the apricot shawl loosely over an ivory Lucknowi kurta set for a winter wedding lunch, anchored with gold jhumkas and leather kolhapuris. For the black colourway, fold it into a broad wrap over a charcoal wool salwar suit at an evening cultural event, letting the embroidery speak as jewellery. Both colours travel beautifully over a silk saree at a December reception: simply let the shawl fall from one shoulder, pinned at the collarbone with an antique tribal brooch in silver or oxidised brass.
Fabric & care
Pure wool breathes and also remembers neglect. Hand wash in cool water using a gentle, pH-neutral wool wash; never wring. Press the water out carefully between two clean towels and reshape flat to dry away from direct sunlight, which fades embroidery threads over time. Never hang a wet wool shawl. Store folded, not rolled, between sheets of acid-free tissue, and place a cedar block nearby to discourage moths. With attentive care, a well-made wool shawl softens and improves across decades of use.
