Behind this piece
Patan, a medieval city in northern Gujarat, was once the capital of the Solanki dynasty and home to one of the world's most demanding textile traditions. The Patola saree is woven using the double ikat technique, in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before a single thread is set on the loom. The Salvi community of Patan has practised this method for centuries, producing geometric precision that looks identical on both faces of the cloth. A single saree can take months to complete. The contrast red here is characteristic of the tradition's bold, symmetrical vocabulary.
How to style
Wear this saree in a Gujarati seedha pallu drape to honour its regional origins, pairing it with a raw silk or brocade blouse in deep ivory or forest green. For a formal wedding reception, gold Kundan jewellery with ruby centres and closed-toe heels in cognac leather complement the red tones. A more restrained daytime look works well with a short-sleeved blouse in cream and oxidised silver earrings. The geometric ikat pattern reads strongly from a distance, so keep accessories minimal and allow the weave to speak for itself.
Fabric & care
Pure silk Patola requires dry cleaning only. The double ikat dyeing process uses natural and synthetic resist dyes that can bleed if exposed to water or domestic detergents. Store the saree rolled in a clean muslin cloth rather than folded sharply, as repeated fold lines weaken silk fibres over time. Keep it away from direct sunlight and synthetic mothballs. Instead, use dried neem leaves or cedar blocks for protection. Air the saree every few months in shade. Handled correctly, a Patola saree endures across generations without loss of lustre or structural integrity.
