about the piece,

Description

There are shawls that keep you warm, and then there are shawls that hold an entire civilisation within their folds. This piece is woven from pure Pashmina, the legendary fibre combed from the undercoat of Changthangi goats that graze the high-altitude pastures of Ladakh. What elevates it into a work of quiet devotion is the Sozni embroidery worked across its field: a needle technique perfected by Kashmiri craftsmen over several centuries, executed stitch by patient stitch with no embroidery frame to guide the hand. The motifs, voluptuous paisleys and delicate floral leaves rendered in multicolour thread, follow a grammar of design that traces its lineage to the great shawl ateliers of Srinagar and the Jhelum valley. At this level of artisanship, a single shawl may occupy a skilled embroiderer for many months. The result is textile that behaves like a heirloom from the moment it arrives. Drape it over formal silk at a winter wedding, or let it rest on plain ivory kurta to allow the embroidery its full conversation with the light.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sozni is among the most disciplined needle arts Kashmir has ever produced. Practised in the old quarters of Srinagar, it demands a single needle, undyed thread, and years of apprenticeship before a craftsman earns the right to attempt the paisley, that teardrop form the Valley has claimed as its own. Here, the motif travels across pure Pashmina in multicolour thread, each floral leaf built stitch by patient stitch from the underside of the cloth. The fibre itself originates from the Changthangi goat of Ladakh's high plateaus, spun fine enough to pass through a finger ring.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear it folded lengthwise over a ivory Banarasi silk saree for a winter wedding, anchoring the look with uncut emerald studs and kolhapuri heels in tan. For a diaspora occasion, drape it loosely over a camel cashmere co-ord set and let the paisleys do the colour work. On quieter days, knot it at the collarbone over a charcoal turtleneck, paired with slim cigarette trousers and oxidised silver earrings. The multicolour embroidery holds its own against both muted and jewel-toned ground fabrics without competing.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand wash in cool water with a capful of mild, pH-neutral shampoo, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Rinse gently, press water out between two clean towels, and lay flat on a cotton sheet away from direct sunlight to dry. Dry cleaning is equally safe and recommended before long storage. Fold along the embroidery rather than across it to prevent thread stress. Store wrapped in soft muslin inside a breathable cotton bag, never plastic. A cedar block nearby discourages moths without the harshness of naphthalene. Treated with care, pure Pashmina deepens in lustre across decades.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
