about the piece,

Description

Some colours arrive slowly, the way dusk settles over the Bay of Bengal, softening from rose into lavender without announcing the change. This saree is hand-painted in the Pattachitra tradition of Odisha, a practice rooted in the temple towns of Puri and Raghurajpur, where natural pigments and fine brushwork have long served devotion as much as adornment. The motifs, rendered with characteristic fine outlines and layered washes, draw on a visual vocabulary that is centuries old, passed through generations of chitrakara families who inherit both the skill and the story. The ground is tussar silk, wild-gathered and sun-warmed in character, with a texture that holds the painted surface with quiet authority. Its natural slub and gentle luminosity make it a cloth that rewards unhurried looking. The pink-lavender palette sits at the rarer, more contemplative end of festive dressing, suited to pujas, cultural evenings, and celebrations where restraint is itself an elegance. Pair it with uncut kundan or silver filigree jewellery from Cuttack to honour the Odishan lineage. A single flower worn in the hair completes the picture without distraction.

the story,

Behind this piece

Pattachitra, meaning "cloth picture" in Sanskrit, is one of Odisha's oldest living art traditions, practised by the Chitrakar community across villages near Puri and Raghurajpur. Rooted in the rituals of the Jagannath temple, these painters once created sacred scrolls for pilgrims. On this saree, that same devotional precision translates to a softer register: the pink-lavender palette of natural tussar carries hand-painted motifs in the classical style, each line drawn with a fine tamarind-seed brush. The silk itself, reeled from wild cocoons in Jharkhand and Odisha's forests, holds the pigment with rare depth.

to wear it,

How to style

For a daytime cultural gathering, pair this saree with an unstitched raw silk blouse in warm ivory and flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. At an evening mehendi or sangeet, a deep rose velvet blouse with a sweetheart neckline lets the painted border command attention. Silver jewellery from Odisha, particularly filigree work from Cuttack, echoes the craft's regional roots without competing with the motifs. For a quieter office occasion, drape it in a Nivi style with a tucked-in kurta-cut blouse in antique gold and minimal oxidised studs.

to last,

Fabric & care

Tussar silk is a wild fibre and requires considered handling. Hand wash gently in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the painted portions as dry as possible during the process. Never wring or twist the fabric. Roll it in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water, then dry flat in shade away from direct sunlight, which fades both the silk's natural golden undertone and the hand-applied pigments. Store folded in soft muslin, away from synthetic materials. Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks along the painted surface.
