about the piece,

Description

There is a colour that exists between first light and ripe fruit, and this saree lives precisely there. Woven in the Jamdani tradition of Bengal, one of the oldest and most demanding supplementary-weft techniques in the subcontract, this saree carries its pattern not through print but through the loom itself. The geometric motifs, rendered in what the weaver community of Fulia and Shantipur has long called a floating-thread style, draw their angular rhythm from a global textile conversation, meeting Aztec patterning with distinctly Gangetic sensibility. Pure cotton breathes with the generosity that only hand-cultivated, hand-woven cloth can offer, draping soft and cooling against the skin through long ceremonial afternoons or unhurried evenings. The pear-sorbet ground holds its freshness without effort, never demanding attention, simply earning it. Pair this saree with an unstitched ivory or raw-silk blouse in a contrasting weave to let the Jamdani surface speak clearly. A single strand of oxidised silver, worn close to the neck, will complete the register without crowding it.

the story,

Behind this piece

Jamdani is among the oldest surviving weave traditions on the Indian subcontinent, its roots tracing to the muslin workshops of Dhaka and the Bengal delta, where weavers once supplied the courts of the Mughals and later the East India Company. Recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, the technique involves supplementary weft threads worked directly onto the loom by hand, without a shuttle, creating figures that seem to float within the cloth. This saree carries that lineage into an unexpected register: an Aztec geometry rendered in the Jamdani idiom, in the cool, breathable language of pure cotton.

to wear it,

How to style

For a curated daytime occasion, pair this saree with a structured sleeveless blouse in ivory or warm white cotton, and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and block-printed kolhapuris. At a literary festival or gallery opening, drape it in the Bengali style with a soft pleat and team it with a terracotta bead necklace and flat mojris. For a festive evening gathering, choose a deep forest-green blouse in raw silk to anchor the pear-sorbet ground, and add gold-toned chandbalis and strappy block-heeled sandals for a deliberate, considered contrast.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton Jamdani requires a gentle hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Do not soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged immersion weakens the supplementary weft threads over time. Rinse thoroughly and never wring; press the water out gently between two towels. Dry flat in shade to preserve the sorbet tone and prevent shrinkage. Iron on a medium-low setting while slightly damp, on the reverse. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, away from direct light, to protect both the weave structure and the colour.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
