Multicolored Crinkled Bandhani Tie-Dye Stole
Hand-wash gently with mild detergent. Do not wring. Dry in shade, iron on the lowest setting.
Description
Colour does not simply sit on this stole; it moves, gathers, and breathes. Bandhani is one of India's oldest resist-dyeing traditions, practised with extraordinary patience by artisan communities in Gujarat and Rajasthan, where cloth is pinched into thousands of tiny points, bound by hand, and submerged in successive dye baths to reveal its characteristic constellation of dots. This stole carries that centuries-old grammar across pure chiffon, a fabric so fine it catches the air with the slightest movement. The crinkled texture is not an accident but a considered finish, one that deepens the play of pink and red across the surface and lends the piece a natural, lived-in softness. Chiffon's translucency allows the bandhani pattern to read almost like light itself, shifting between rose and crimson depending on how the stole falls. It suits festive afternoons, evening gatherings, and occasions where dressing feels like a considered act rather than a habit. Drape it loosely over the shoulders with a solid kurta in ivory or deep plum, letting the colour do its quiet, confident work. It folds into very little and travels well.

Behind this piece
Bandhani is among the oldest resist-dyeing traditions in India, practised for centuries across the Kutch and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat, as well as in Rajasthan. The craft takes its name from the Sanskrit "bandhan," meaning to bind. Artisans gather tiny pinches of fabric and tie each point with thread before submersion in dye baths, creating the characteristic dotted patterns that bloom across the surface. This stole carries that same patient geometry, rendered in chiffon and brought alive through crinkle texture, layering shades of pink and red into something genuinely luminous.
How to style
Drape this stole loosely over a cream Lucknawi kurta for a festive afternoon gathering, allowing the pink and red to carry all the colour. For an evening occasion, knot it lightly at the collarbone over a plain silk blouse and cigarette trousers. The crinkled texture also lends itself beautifully to casual wear, tucked into a denim jacket for a considered, everyday look. Complement the warm tones with oxidised silver jhumkas or delicate gold drops. Kolhapuri flats or block-heeled juttis complete each pairing without competing with the stole's natural movement.
Fabric & care
Pure chiffon is a finely woven, lightweight fabric that rewards gentle handling. Hand wash this stole in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric, as this distorts both the weave and the crinkle finish. Rinse thoroughly and press between two soft towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the tie-dye pigments over time. Store loosely folded in a breathable muslin bag rather than a sealed plastic cover. With consistent care, the colours and texture will remain vivid for many years.
